Pain in your backside during pregnancy? It could be your SI Joint!
Are you experiencing localized pain on your backside as your pregnancy progresses? Your Sacroiliac Joint, commonly referred to as your SI joint, is the joint where part of your pelvis called your ilium meets up with the sacrum.
During pregnancy, as the body prepares for birth, the movement of this joint can start to increase and change in ways it is not used to, leading to pain. Typically, this pain is described as a sharp stabbing pain that is short lasting and can worsen with activities such as walking and climbing stairs. Although it can occur on both sides, it more commonly occurs on one side more than the other.
In an attempt to help stabilize this joint, the hip and low back muscles may start to tighten up which could lead to an achy and/or tight sensation in the area. Although this pain during pregnancy can be intense, there are things we can do to help!
Soft Tissue Release:
Place a tennis ball or a lacrosse ball between your glutes and a wall and gently lean against the wall to roll these muscles out. Do this for 1-2 mins on each side.
Pelvic Stability Exercises:
Treating SIJ dysfunction can be complex and unique to each individual. These exercises can be a good starting point but may not completely solve the issue. Contact us today for an initial evaluation so we can develop a program unique to your needs! If these exercises hurt in any way, please stop.
