Physical therapy during pregnancy can help manage pain/discomfort, keep you active, and help prepare for both labor and delivery along with the early postpartum period.
Each pregnancy and experience during pregnancy is different, so we tailor each plan of care to your unique needs and goals. In general, you can expect:
-Manual therapy to help reduce pain/discomfort
-Exercises to improve hip and pelvic floor mobility
-Strengthening exercises
-Learn proper coordination of the core and pelvic floor muscles
-Help prepare for labor and delivery
-Discuss postpartum expectations
Did you know it is beneficial to exercise during a healthy pregnancy? Research has shown exercise can help reduce pregnancy related disorders including gestational diabetes, excessive weight gain, hypertensive disorders, urinary incontinence, fetal macrosomia, back pain, anxiety and depression. Current ACOG exercise guidelines during pregnancy suggest at least 150 mins of moderate-intensity aerobic and resistance training spread throughout the week.
But exercising during pregnancy can be scary! Let us help you :) Physical therapy during pregnancy will help keep you active in a way that is beneficial to both you and the baby! You will also learn simple exercises that will help open the hips and the pelvis while relaxing the pelvic floor muscles. Restrictions in mobility can make it challenging for your baby to position themselves in an ideal way for birth. On top of that, if you have a lot of tension in the pelvic floor muscles, it will be more challenging for the baby to push through them.
