Push Prep for Birth, Taught By Pelvic Health Doctors of Physical Therapy
Most people are never taught how to push for birth. Our push prep sessions help you understand your pelvic floor, practice effective pushing strategies, and feel prepared heading into labor.
Why Pushing Can Feel Confusing
Pushing is often assumed to be instinctive, but it is a learned skill for many people.
-
Without guidance, it is common to unintentionally contract the pelvic floor instead of allowing it to relax and lengthen
-
This can make pushing feel harder, less coordinated, or more exhausting, as well as prolong the 2nd stage of labor!
With the right education and practice, this is very teachable. We ensure all of our prenatal clients learn how to push during birth and help them find their most effective pushing strategy, so they feel informed, prepared, and confident heading into labor.
What Is Push Prep?
A push prep session is a one-on-one appointment starting around 33 weeks gestation with a doctor of physical therapy. These sessions focus on education, awareness, and practice so you feel confident and informed before birth. With your consent, a pelvic floor examination will take place to provide you with feedback.
During a push prep session, we help you:
-
Understand how your pelvic floor works during pushing
-
Practice relaxing and lengthening the pelvic floor muscles
-
Coordinate breathing and pushing strategies
-
Determine your most effective pushing strategy based on your body
-
Ask questions and feel prepared, not overwhelmed

"The pelvRX team is incredible. I was very nervous for the changes my body would go through during pregnancy and postpartum. Working with Kelly during pregnancy was a huge help in preparing for birth and sessions with Kelly and Priya postpartum have been the greatest thing for me both physically and mentally to get reconnected with my body again. They will always start each session checking in, listening to how you’re doing and if there are specific areas needing some work, and then implementing targeted movements during each visit to address those areas. Kelly and Priya have helped navigate postpartum with such encouragement and understanding. I cannot recommend them enough!"
