What to Expect During Your Postpartum Physical Therapy Sessions

Postpartum can be a challenging and unpredictable time. We want to take out the mystery of postpartum physical therapy to put you at ease!

During your first session, a Doctor of Physical Therapy will perform an evaluation. This involves:

  • An in-depth conversation about your pregnancy, labor and delivery, previous pregnancies, current symptoms, sleep, nutrition, and (most importantly) your goals!

  • A general movement screen to identify any limitations

  • A general strength screen

  • Check for residual Diastasis Recti

  • Assess core activation

  • Assess pelvic floor strength and coordination. This can be done through conversation, an external assessment, and/or an internal assessment. A discussion around options will take place during your initial assessment with a more in-depth look taking place typically during the second session. You are always in complete control of how we assess your pelvic floor! If you are uncomfortable with an external view or internal assessment for any reason, we skip this part!

  • Discussion of our findings, most appropriate plan of care unique to your needs, and a few exercises to get you started!

Follow-up sessions which typically take place x1/week will include more treatment than assessment. Treatments may include but are not limited to:

  • Manual Intervention to calm things down (soft tissue massage, myofasical release, dry needling, cupping, etc).

  • Improve your brain's ability to communicate with your core and pelvic floor muscles so we can then focus on building strength

  • Build things up through strength training

  • Goal specific exercises so you can get back to crushing any goal you have!

At PelvRx, we firmly believe in meeting you where you are and helping you get back to what YOU love. We do this by calming things down, building them up, and crushing your goals.
